In the fall of 2013, longtime local business owner, Dave Wilderotter of Tahoe Dave’s Skis & Boards, asked his then Marketing Manager, Lindsay Thayer, “Why doesn’t North Tahoe and Truckee have a year-round shop local program?” Great question! Dave & Lindsay put their heads together and initially modeled the program from a “Shop Local” postcard Dave had picked up while he was in his home state, Michigan. They created a “Show Your Love – Shop Local” campaign, made “LOVE” stickers and began selling them in all five of his shops to begin creating awareness. Lindsay then joined Ginger Karl, Joy Doyle, and Marianne Schneider in the North Lake Tahoe-Truckee Leadership Program in the Spring of 2014. Together these ladies created an action plan for the Shop Local Program in their leadership class – and this is when the program truly came to life. In the Summer of 2014, Shop North Tahoe Truckee gained some legs and received funding primarily from Placer County with contributing funds from the Incline Village Business Association, Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce and the Truckee Downtown Merchants Association. The full program was developed and was managed through the Business Association Chamber Collaborative (BACC), a collective group of business associations and chambers.
WHY LOCAL
HISTORY
WHERE WE ARE TODAY
In 2023, the North Tahoe Chamber, Tahoe City Downtown Association and North Tahoe Business Association embarked on a journey with a singular mission — to craft a strategy that enhances their efficiency and collaboration, ultimately serving our local businesses. After eight months of dedicated planning, they thoughtfully crafted an Alignment Roadmap which serves as a robust foundation for their collective endeavor to streamline operations, foster unity, and monitor their progress toward shared objectives. A key priority for the first year of this collaborative effort was the launch of a “Shop Local Program.”
With support from the Business and Chamber Advisory Committee (BACAC) and funding from TOT-TBID Dollars At Work, the re-launch of the “Love North Tahoe” Program became a reality in the Fall of 2024.
